Introduction

Dental procedures, whether routine or complex, can often leave you feeling sore and uncomfortable. Fortunately, homeopathy offers a range of remedies to help manage the anxiety commonly associated with going to the dentist, pain experienced post any dental work, reduce swelling, and promote fast healing.

From personal experience, I have had root canals, and tooth implants fitted, and fully empathise with those who find visits to the dentist rather daunting. Although ‘fortunate’ might not be the ideal word, I had the unique opportunity to compare my pain management experience after having the implant fitted, both with and without the benefits of homeopathy.

Anxiety and Apprehension

Let’s begin with the anxiety and apprehension that sets in before heading to the dentist for the procedure. The mere thought of going to the dentist filled me with dread. My heart would race, my palms would sweat, and a knot of anxiety would tighten in my stomach. The anticipation of the procedure was almost as daunting as the procedure itself. Let’s delve into the remedies that can alleviate these dreadful feelings.

Aconite – Symptoms such as a racing heart, dry mouth and a sense of impending doom, are typical symptoms where Aconite may be indicated. This remedy can help calm these acute anxiety symptoms, making it easier to manage the fear associated with dental appointments.

Argentum Nitricum – Anxiety and nervousness associated with the anticipation of going to the dentist and having the procedure done, is where this remedy is second to none. Individuals who benefit from Argentum Nitricum typically feel an intense apprehension and restlessness leading up to the appointment. They may experience symptoms like trembling, sweating and a strong urge to avoid the situation. Feeling overwhelmed by the thought of the procedure, imagining all sorts of worst-case scenarios, is typical of this remedy. This remedy will help to calm the mind and reduce the physical manifestations of anxiety, making it easier to face the dentist with a sense of calm and control.

Gelsemium – Individuals who benefit from Gelsemium typically feel paralysed by the anxiety, experiencing symptoms like trembling, weakness and a sensation of heaviness. They may also have ‘butterflies’ in their stomach, feel dizzy or even experience diarrhoea due to their nervousness. With this nervousness, they may have a very dry mouth, but not feel thirsty at all. On the day of the procedure, they may wake up rather tired as they had trouble sleeping the night before, and may end up cancelling or postponing the appointment as a way of avoiding the situation altogether. Gelsemium helps to calm these intense feelings of dread, allowing individuals to approach their dental visit with a greater sense of calm and stability.

Post-operative recovery and Pain management:

After enduring the procedure, the next step is focusing on your recovery. Homeopathic remedies can support a faster healing process and may even reduce the need for antibiotics or painkillers.

From my own experience, I had to undergo a dental implant procedure twice. The first time, I was new to homeopathy and unaware of its extensive benefits. Consequently, I didn’t use any remedies to aid with pain and recovery, relying instead on strong painkillers and prophylactic antibiotics, which left me feeling quite unwell. Despite taking antibiotics, the bone around my implant became infected. As a result, the implant had to be removed, the surrounding tissue debrided, and I had to wait six months for the bone to heal, before the implant could be attached again.

The 2nd time I went through the implant procedure, I used the following homeopathic remedies to help the bone and tissue heal:

Surgery Mix – This lovely combination contains Arnica, Bellis Perenis, Calendula, Hypericum and Staphisagria.

  • Arnica: This is a popular remedy for reducing post-operative pain, swelling and bruising, it helps speed up the healing process.
  • Bellis Perenis: Similar to Arnica, this remedy is beneficial to repair deeper layers of tissue and helps with swelling and bruised soreness.
  • Calendula officinalis: Effective in preventing post-operative infections and promoting the closure of surgical wounds. It also helps reduce pain and tenderness.
  • Hypericum Perforatum: Known as the ‘Arnica of the Nerves’, this remedy is useful for acute post-operative pain, especially when the surgical site is sensitive and painful to touch. The pains are usually described as sharp and shooting.

This Surgery Mix combination fosters a more holistic recovery, ensuring that both the body and mind are cared for during the healing process.

Despite using this effective combination, my pain remained unbearable once the local anaesthetic wore off. The area around the dental implant became red, throbbing, and felt very hot. This is where Belladonna proved to be invaluable, serving to manage my pain without the need for painkillers like Codeine, Paracetamol, or Ibuprofen.

Once my gums at the implant site had repaired, I used the tissue salt Calcarea Phosphoricum to aid in bone development and cell turnover. Cell turnover is important, as new bone cells are required to hold the implant securely in place. I also included a remedy called Symphytum, also known as bone knit, to support bone healing and regeneration, which is essential for the stability of the implant. Symphytum can also help reduce post-operative pain, and reduce the swelling around the implant site, making the recovery process more comfortable.

At my 1-month check-up, the implantologist was astonished at how well the bone was healing, allowing my crown to be fitted earlier than anticipated.

As you can see from my experience, homeopathy offers a truly holistic experience by promoting faster healing, reducing pain and inflammation, and supporting emotional well-being. There are many other remedies which can assist with healing and pain management, therefore working with a professional homeopath will provide you with a bespoke plan that satisfy your needs. Integrating homeopathy with conventional dental treatments can lead to a more comfortable and efficient recovery process.
