What are Tissue Salts?
Tissue salts, also known as cell salts or Schuessler salts, have been a cornerstone of homeopathy for over a century. These remarkable remedies are based on the principle that imbalances in twelve essential mineral salts within our bodies can lead to various health conditions.
The Visionary behind Tissue Salts:
Dr. Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler, a German physician, pioneered the concept of tissue salts. He believed that these minerals play a crucial role in our cells’ functioning. When there’s a deficiency in any of these twelve salts, it can disrupt cellular processes and ultimately lead to illness. Schuessler found that once the human body was cremated, the ash left over contained 12 essential salts. He found that the most effective way to assimilate these salts was through a homeopathically prepared micro-dose, which gets absorbed rapidly and nourishes our cells.

The Twelve Tissue Salts:
Calcarea Fluorica (Calc Fluor): Tones and Purges
- Bone and Teeth Development: Essential for bone and teeth development, as well as hair and nail growth. Can be used throughout life and during pregnancy. Receding gums and loose teeth signal Calc Fluor deficiency.
- Elasticity and Stretch Marks: Supports connective tissue elasticity; preventing stretch marks during pregnancy and addressing circulatory problems like in varicose veins.
- Joint Health and Flexibility: Maintains supple joints, cartilage, muscles and skin. Useful for yoga teachers, acrobats, and dancers who rely on flexibility. Also provides tone and tension for better balance in hypermobile individuals.
- Scar Tissue Dissolution: Post-surgery incisions benefit from Calc Fluor, aiding in scar tissue dissolution. Also helps prevent keloids and supports healing after acne eruptions.
- Uterine Health and Beyond: Nourishes uterine ligaments which can alleviate sensations of dragging or heaviness due to uterine prolapse. Restores muscle tone in rectal prolapses, potentially preventing haemorrhoids. It can also ease bladder spasms, and urinary incontinence.
Calcarea Phosphoricum (Calc Phos): Cell Regulator and Generator
- Bone Health and Regeneration: Powerhouse for bone development and cell turnover. Combats osteoporosis and aids the healing of fractured or weakened bones.
- Growing Pains and Dental Support: Soothes teething children with slow or difficult dentition. Strengthens bones during rapid growth phases, making it ideal for teens experiencing strain on bones and muscles.
- Mental Agility Booster: Enhances brain function, memory, concentration, and provides mental clarity.
- Numbness and Tingling: Acts as a nerve tonic therefore, helps in conditions where there are pins and needs, and numbness of limbs.
Calcarea Sulphurica (Calc Sulph): Purifier and Cleaner
- Infection and Pus Purge: Clears infections and ripens pus, bringing it to the surface for further healing. It’s a powerful remedy when you need to tackle infections head-on.
- Abscesses and Discharges: Thick, yellow and lumpy discharges (think boils and nasal catarrh) call for Calc Sulph. It’s your go-to for addressing these uncomfortable issues.
- Wound Healing and Mucus Protection: Not only aids wound healing but also shields mucus linings from acid irritation. For peptic ulcer sufferers, Calc Sulph provides a protective barrier against digestive acids.
- Gum Bleeding: When gums bleed during brushing, try a synergistic trio: Calc Sulph, Calc Fluor and Calc Phos. This combination promotes oral health and bids farewell to bleeding gums.
Ferrum Phosphoricum (Ferr Phos): Blood oxygenator and Anti-Inflammatory
- Low Grade Fevers: First-line tissue salt for low-grade fevers (up to 38.5°C), when you’re at the beginning of a cough or cold. Effective again any inflammation, congestion and fevers, which sometimes are accompanied by headaches behind the eyes.
- Homeopathic Iron Infusion: Provides cells with iron; essential for anaemic conditions and blood loss situations like nosebleeds. Enhances oxygen transport due to its iron content, therefore useful for pale gums which indicate reduced oxygenation. Deficiency of this tissue salt leads to fatigue and lethargy.
- Boosting Immunity: Someone requiring Ferrum Phos typically exhibits a low resistance to germs and may have a weakened immune system
Kali Muriaticum (Kali Mur): Detoxification and Blood Conditioner
- Chronic Inflammation: A go-to for chronic inflammation, including conditions like arthritis and rheumatism
- Post–Infection Recovery: After infections, Kali Mur mops up debris, aiding elimination. Essential during convalescence after fever or infections.
- Thick, White Discharges: Second in line for colds (after Ferrum Phos) which targets thick, white fatty catarrh, which can ease eustachian blockages. Can help in reducing cholesterol build up in arteries.
- Children’s tissue salt: Associated with children as it helps with conditions like oral thrush (thick, white coated tongue), and for snotty children with plenty of thick, white nasal discharge.
- Liver salt: When bodily fluids turn viscous, Kali Mur steps in. Corrects blood thickening and clotting problems. By allowing the liver to cleanse and purify the blood, it supports overall well-being
Kali Phosphoricum (Kali Phos): Nerve Nutrient and Soother
- Mental Fatigue and Brain Fog Buster: A student’s ally during intense study session, where you feel you cannot absorb any more information.
- Burnout and Overwork: Kali Phos offers much needed support when poor concentration and memory loss are a problem. It plays a crucial role in the brain’s chemistry, calming nerves and restoring balance to the nervous system. Great in times of depression, insomnia, anxiety and irritability. Invaluable in preventing chronic fatigue in such cases.
- Calms Hyperactivity: Soothes hyperactive children by restoring balance and focus.
- Metabolism Support for Diabetics: Aids in sugar metabolism, making it a valuable holistic support for diabetic patients.
Kali Sulphuricum (Kali Sulph): Oxygen Exchanger and Cell Builder
- Yellow discharges: Clears out stubborn infections with yellow discharges that commonly come with coughs, colds and ear complaints.; and promotes healing.
- Recovery: Useful at the end-of-catarrhal process. Ferrum Phos starts the inflammatory phase, Kali Mur handles the suppuration, and Kali Sulph mops up the debris to complete recovery.
- Healthy skin: Addresses flaky, itchy skin (think Dandruff or Cradle Cap). Sheds dead skin cells, maintains healthy skin, and prevents excessive scaling.
- Oxygen Exchanger: Ensures every cell receives adequate oxygen, which is key to our overall health and vitality.
Magnesia Phosphoricum (Mag Phos): Anti-spasmodic and Nerve Stabiliser
- Muscle Relaxation and Cramp Relief: Alleviates menstrual cramps which relieved by a hot water bottle applied to the abdomen. Eases calf cramps in runners and athletes during intense workouts. Soothes colicky pains in babies. Mag Phos works best when dissolved in warm water.
- Nervous System Support: Alongside Calc Phos and Kali Phos, this tissue salt supports the nervous system during trauma. Whether physical injury, emotional stress, or shock, Mag Phos acts as a gentle nerve tonic. Reduces nerve pain associated with Sciatica.
- Magnesium Deficiency: Twitching muscles, fatigue and weakness – all signs of Magnesium deficiency. Mag Phos restores this essential mineral, supporting your vitality
Natrum Muriaticum (Nat Mur): Fluid Regulator
- Fluid Balancer: Crucial for balancing fluid levels within cells. An imbalance can restrict blood flow to the brain, causing tension headaches and sore necks. Dry skin and joint swelling (like ankles) may result from water balance disequilibrium, which Nat mur restores.
- Energy salt: Nat Mur serves as an energy tonic during times of tension and fatigue. It revitalises and supports overall well-being.
- Thin, Watery, Discharges: Nasal discharges, tears and other bodily fluids typically present as thin and watery.
- Swellings and Allergies: Targets various swellings like arthritis flare-ups, facial puffiness, and eases allergic reactions like watery and itchy eyes for hay fever.
- Salt cravings: The individual who is lacking in this tissue salt usually craves salty foods and therefore is understandably very thirsty.
- Constipation: Water imbalance affects bowel movements, potentially leading to constipation where stools are hard and dry.
- Signs you need Nat Mur: puffiness under the eyes, Cracked lips, Dandruff and dry, scaly skin, usually along the hairline and in the eyebrows.
Natum Phosphoricum (Nat Phos): Acid Neutraliser
- Acid Reflux and Heartburn: Balances stomach pH, alleviating acid reflux and heartburn. Emulsifies fatty acids for added relief during indigestion.
- Muscular Pain Relief: Works well with Mag Phos for Post-workout recovery by breaking down lactic acid, thereby avoiding muscle cramps.
- Sour, acrid discharges: Nat Phos neutralizes sour and acrid discharges which cause a burning sensation typically in the throat and mouth, and can include the nasal discharge, sweat and other bodily fluids.
- Greasy skin and Enlarged pores: An oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) with enlarged pores, blackheads and pimples may be cleared with Nat Phos.
- Arthritis and Gout: These conditions causing pain are precipitated by inflammation and uric acid build-up, which Nat Phos can help regulate.
Natrum Sulphuricum (Nat Sulph): Liver Cleaner and Excess Fluid Eliminator
- Detoxification and Fluid Balancer: Removes excess fluid from cells complimenting Nat Mur (water distribution) and Nat Phos (water absorption). Supports the liver and gut, which is useful during hangovers to help the liver cleanse alcohol from the system.
- Green Discharges
- Aggravated by Damp Weather: Asthma attacks which are triggered or worsened by damp weather, can be alleviated by Nat Sulph.
- Quality of Sleep: Waking up tired and groggy is a good indication that your liver is burdened. Nat Sulph assists in detoxifying the liver.
Sliica: Cell Cleaser, Tonic and Protector
- Connective Tissue Strength: Fortifies cells, aids nutrient transport, and supports tissue repair. This cell salt is the backbone of our body’s structural integrity.
- The Beauty Mineral: Promotes strong hair, radiant skin and healthy nails. Wrinkle reduction and prevention of dull, brittle hair. Accelerates healing in acne and abscesses. Watch for white spots on nails – potentially Silica deficiency.
- Emotional Balance and Clarity: Expect short tempers, light sensitivities, and tension headaches when there is a Silica imbalance in the body. Headaches can feel like the head is held in a clamp, or there is a band around it.
- Physical Clues: Weakness, malnutrition and involuntary facial twitches (eyelids), can signal a deficiency in this tissue salt.
How to use these Tissue Salts:
- Form: Tissue Salts are typically available as small tablets that dissolve under the tongue. They can also come in forms like creams, gels and ointments.
- Dosage: For general use, the common dosage is 4 tablets, 3 times a day before meals. In cases of acute symptoms, you might take them more frequently, such as every 30 minutes until symptoms improve.
- Administration: Do not swallow the tablets. Instead, let them dissolve in your mouth to ensure they are absorbed through the mucous membranes.
- Combination: You can use multiple tissue salts together if you need to address more than one health condition. A homeopathic practitioner can help you determine the best combination for your needs.
