Introduction

Are you or a loved one struggling with ADHD and constantly seeking that elusive sense of focus and calm? The answer might lie in understanding dopamine dominance. This ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter plays a crucial role in motivation, reward and pleasure, but for those with ADHD, maintaining its balance can be a daily challenge.

In this post, we’ll delve into the fascinating connection between dopamine and ADHD, and explore how homeopathy can offer a natural, effective path to managing symptoms and enhancing well-being.

Attention deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. While the exact causes of ADHD are not fully understood, research highlights the significant role of dopamine dependence in understanding this condition.

Dopamine-seeking behaviors:

Sugar Cravings – Consuming sugar can temporarily boost dopamine levels, providing a short-lived sense of reward and pleasure. This can lead to a cycle of craving and consumption, as the brain seeks to maintain higher dopamine levels. Whilst sugar itself doesn’t cause ADHD, its consumption can exacerbate symptoms. The rapid increase in blood glucose levels followed by a crash can affect mood, energy and attention. These fluctuations can make it harder for these individuals to manage their symptoms effectively. Over-eating foods particularly high in fats and calories also trigger dopamine release, hence incorporating a balanced diet with complex carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats can help stabilize blood sugar levels and thereby reducing the sugar cravings. Physical activity also naturally boosts dopamine levels and improves mood and attention.

Video Gaming, Gambling and Shopping addictions – Engaging in video games, especially those with integrated reward systems, and the thrill of gambling can lead to increased dopamine levels and in turn cultivate addictive behaviors. The act of purchasing new items can provide a dopamine rush, which is why some people engage in compulsive shopping or retail therapy.

Social Media use – The instant gratification from likes, comments and shares on social medica platforms, can stimulate dopamine production, leading to excessive use. Conversely, scrolling for hours either during the day or particularly during the night exposes you to Blue light which can significantly impact individuals with ADHD. Blue light can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. This disruption can lead to poor sleep quality and insomnia. Since sleep is crucial for cognitive function and emotional regulation, poor sleep can exacerbate ADHD symptoms such inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Limiting screen times, using Blue Light filters and encouraging natural light exposure by spending time outdoors, can be helpful in reducing dopamine-seeking behaviors.

Homeopathic remedies to help boost Dopamine levels in ADHD:

Hyoscyamus Niger – Individuals who may benefit from this remedy, often speak rapidly and switch topics frequently. This behavior may indicate that they have numerous thoughts but struggle to organize them coherently. The person can be silly, have a tendency to laugh hysterically and mischievously plays pranks with their friends. Feelings of jealousy and suspicion towards their sibling or partner can be quite a prominent feature. This may be displayed by an intense anger and in this fit of anger, they may hit, bite or even kick someone. Hyoscyamus is a great remedy for the impulsive and hyperactive aspects of ADHD. They may have a compulsion to fumble and pick at things, like the skin on their fingers, lips or their clothes. They have an aversion to being touched and may experience spasms and twitching of muscles.

Lycopodium Clavatum – This remedy is recommended for individuals who struggle to concentrate whilst reading and conversing. They often appear confused and exhibit signs of low self-confidence, or in its polarity, they can be quite competitive and ambitious. It is ideal for children who appear kind and modest in public, but can become angry, irritable, abusive and intolerant at home and with their loved ones. This irritability is usually seen first thing in the morning or late afternoon. People who would benefit from Lycopodium, can also show signs of Dyslexia, where they may make mistakes whilst reading or spelling words. Most people with ADHD, experience some form of gut problems. Lycopodium can be particularly beneficial for those who suffer from bloating and gas caused by various foods.

Phosphorus – This is a wonderful remedy for those with a prominent absent-mindedness. Falling into daydreams may be a favourite pastime for a patient needing this remedy. They are very affectionate, expressive, open and very easy to get along with. Because of this open personality, they are sensitive to external stimuli, and consequently can be easily distracted. They are full of fears and anxieties particularly of the dark and dogs. Therefore, children in particular want to snuggle up with their parents and need a night light on at night. Phosphorus individuals usually love ice-cream or crunching on ice, even in the winter.

Saccharum officinale – This remedy has proved to be quite beneficial in my practice, particularly with children who have an oral fixation where they’re constantly putting things in their mouth, biting their nails or sucking their thumbs. Besides having a voracious appetite, they have an insatiable appetite for sugary foods, yet these children can look quite emaciated. The spikes and dips in blood sugars can leave them very restless, hyperactive and with a tendency to mood swings. As they can become rather homesick, they are quite clingy and can need a lot of attention. These children may also be prone to getting colds and recurrent ear infections.
